Approach and Focus.

We champion quality multidisciplinary and inter-disciplinary research and innovations for sustainable and inclusive socioeconomic development. We particularly focus on studying and utilizing information and communication technologies (ICTs) (informatics), and innovations for sustainable socioeconomic development. Our approach is multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary–particularly uniting information technology, innovations, and development-related disciplines. We focus on all five stages of the informatics lifecycle: development, implementation, adoption, use and impact; as well as overarching issues of strategy and policy. We are motivated by the following facts:

  • Informatics and innovations are key drivers of sustainable development, and are among the key priority areas in Uganda’s current National Development Plan.
  • Developed countries still take a leading position in informatics and development inventions, and conducting scientific research, while low resources countries suffer from significant skill gaps in the same fields.
  • Africa has low research production and innovation capacity that would address its local development challenges.
  • Strengthening informatics and innovation research and training will yield strengthened future generations that can initiate society positive changes, and apply their knowledge for socioeconomic development.

We aim to establish and enhance informatics and development research, innovation and training capacity excellence in Uganda and beyond, in order to be part of a generation that is actively involved in addressing Africa’s key scientific, technological and economic problems at an inclusive and a sustainable level.

Our specific objectives are

  1. To implement and carry out high quality informatics and development research and innovations that enhance inclusive and sustainable development.
  2. Build capacity in informatics and development research and innovations through short course trainings, collaborations, shared learning, mentorships, and internships.
  3. To champion inclusive development by implementing development programs with particular emphasis on interventions for vulnerable people such as women, girls, youth, and Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs).
